Repair Damaged Teeth with Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a porcelain cap designed to fit directly on top of a tooth to repair and strengthen damaged enamel. Furthermore, crowns can deliver cosmetic as well as restorative benefits. Because dental crowns are designed to match the color, shape, size, and texture of your natural teeth, they will blend seamlessly into your smile.

As a biological dentist practicing since 1977, Dr. Chester Clark focuses on the health of both your smile and your entire body. At his Amity, AR, clinic, we are dedicated to providing a safer, more refined quality of dental care.

Why Choose Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns offer a number of benefits, including:

  • Preservation of natural teeth: If fillings, inlays, and onlays are unable to properly treat decay, dental crowns are often an effective solution for keeping your tooth healthy.
  • Improved oral health: An advanced cavity can penetrate the pulp at the center of your tooth, placing both the entire tooth and surrounding jawbone at risk. Dental crowns serve as a long-term solution, removing decay and preserving the underlying tooth. Implant-supported crowns offer the added benefit of preventing jawbone recession.
  • A more attractive smile: Many patients may feel self-conscious about smiling with cracks or chips in their teeth. You can enhance these teeth with a dental crown that matches the color and luster of healthy teeth.
  • Boosted self-esteem: There is no need to live with a blemished smile. Once your dental crown is placed at our Amity clinic, you may find yourself smiling with renewed confidence.
  • Long-term treatment: When properly taken care of, a dental crown can last 15 years or longer.

Are You a Candidate?

Dr. Clark may recommend a dental crown if you have:

  • Severe cavities
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Chips or cracks
  • Severe discoloration
  • Difficulty chewing

If you are interested in receiving an implant-supported dental crown, Dr. Clark will also need to determine if you have adequate jawbone density to support the titanium post.

Implant-supported vs. traditional crown
Where an implant-supported crown is anchored to a dental implant, traditional crowns are placed directly on top of a natural tooth.

A Look at the Procedure

Traditional Dental Crown

Before your dental crown can be placed, your tooth will need to be prepped. This involves filing off a small layer of enamel in order to make room for the crown in your smile, a process which is typically done under local anesthetic. Once your tooth has been resized, an impression of your tooth can be made and sent to a trusted laboratory for fabrication. You may be given a temporary crown to protect your tooth during this period.

Once your custom crown arrives, Dr. Clark will check the fit before affixing the restoration to your tooth using a strong bonding agent. While you can expect some soreness in the days after it is placed, you can immediately return to your normal diet.

Dental crowns are as a powerful restorative solution to damaged teeth.

Implant-Supported Dental Crown

This procedure has a longer treatment timeline than a traditional dental crown. Rather than placing the crown onto an existing tooth, the doctor will first insert a titanium post into your jaw. During this procedure, he will make an incision in your gums through which to place the implant. After three to six months, the implant will ideally have fused with the jawbone enough to serve as a solid foundation for your crown. At this point, you can return to the office to receive your crown and the abutment that will attach it to the implant.
