Faster Healing Naturally with Platelet-Rich Fibrin

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is an advanced treatment which speeds your body’s natural healing after oral surgery. At Amity Gentle Dental in Amity, AR, we use PRF after tooth extractions and dental implant placement to reduce complications and help our patients recover more quickly. Dr. Chester V. Clark Jr. studied PRF therapy with Richard J. Miron, the author of the premier textbook on this innovative treatment. Since we use only your own tissue to perform PRF, this treatment is safe and effective.

What Is Platelet-Rich Fibrin?

Your blood is made up of small components, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The role of platelets is to encourage blood to clot. With platelet-rich fibrin, we use a centrifuge to create a substance with a higher concentration of these cellular fragments.

Unlike platelet-rich plasma (PRP), the final product we use is not a liquid. Instead, it is a thick substance which we can form into plugs or membranes to place over extraction sites and implants. By placing this fibrin over surgical sites, we can encourage the natural healing processes of your body to work more quickly.

PRF centrifuge
By spinning a sample of blood at a high speed, the centrifuge separates out its components into distinct layers, allowing us to concentrate high levels of platelets.

How It Works

The process for creating PRF is simple. Before your procedure, Dr. Clark or another member of our team will draw a small amount of blood. Then we will place your blood into a centrifuge for about 10 minutes. Spinning the tissue in the centrifuge will separate the PRF clot from platelet-poor plasma and red blood cells.

Once we have the PRF clot, we can manipulate it into the proper form based on the type of treatment you received. At the end of your extraction or implant placement procedure, Dr. Clark can place the plug or membrane. As you heal, your body will naturally absorb the PRF.

Special Considerations for PRF

While a very powerful tool, PRF therapy, is not appropriate for every person. Patients with a poor diet or certain health concerns may not benefit from treatment with platelet-rich fibrin. Dr. Clark will carefully assess your oral health to determine whether PRF is right for you.

It is also important to note that PRF adds an additional cost to your final treatment. At our office, we typically charge between $300 and $500 for PRF, compared to other offices which can charge $700 or more. However, the additional investment upfront can reduce your risk of complications and follow-up procedures in the future.

Platelet-rich fibrin is loaded with healing factors, making it a natural method for improving the results of your extraction or implant placement surgery.

The Benefits of Using Platelet-Rich Fibrin

This innovative therapy offers a range of benefits. Since it uses your own tissue, there is no chance that your body will reject the substance as it may with a foreign graft material. In addition, PRF:

  • Speeds healing
  • Minimizes pain during recovery
  • Preserves bone structure
  • Enhances bone growth
